WE'RE CELEBRATING BLOODHOUNDS, UGLY PUPS & WDU!
For the first time in the show's history, a Bloodhound won first place at the Westminster Dog Show (see the smiling boy in all his glory), and while the photos of all the doggos are cute, we particularly enjoy the photos of the very serious owners running alongside them in their business attire. If we weren't busy binging the live bear cams (keep reading for more info.) we'd definitely be Googling more of those. 😎

The appropriately named, Mr. Happy Face, has been crowned World's Ugliest Dog &, naturally, we love him. He had about a month left to live when he was rescued by his owner. Riddled with tumors & in need of life-long medication, Mr. Happy Face may not meet AKC's pedigree standards, but he has exceeded ours.

#DOGLIFE HACKS
Hot take: Your pup doesn't think fireworks are lit.
We don't need to look at the latest polling data to know that firework-holidays are not favored among doggos of all breeds, sizes & good-ness. Instead, we turned to the experts: here are some tips, tricks & hot takes direct from the Wonder Dog University team.
CLEO has never had any issues with sound sensitivity! She’s had exposure since a young age to shooting guns at the farm and fireworks in the backyard. She loves playing in the rain so much I don’t think she even notices the thunder! If I know I’m going to be out or away from the home on a holiday that has excessive fireworks I will just give her a stuffed Kong or something if the sort to keep her occupied.
- CARSON, TRAINING ASSISTANT
MY TWO CATS are pretty good with loud noises such as fireworks and thunder, it helps that one of them is deaf. However, Kirby, my non-deaf cat, tends to get scared from the initial pop and will barricade herself under my bed in a suitcase. Once she scans the scene and makes sure it's safe, she will usually return to her normal activities.
- ADRIANNA, MARKETING COORDINATOR
MY GUY JASPER has a true meltdown when there's thunder, fireworks or even a loud beeping sound. He thinks the sky is falling and goes into a panic. It's extremely stressful for both of us. So, I've tried everything. The best way to protect your dog is to leave the area before the sound starts or as soon as you can. That's not always possible, right? Barring that, Sileo prescription oral gel is THE best solution for fireworks. My other option, when I don't have that on hand, runs a close third. I administer calming medication immediately, create background noise in several rooms to buffer the incoming sounds (run my bathroom exhaust fan, turn on calming music, run a white noise machine and turn the dryer on with felt dryer balls inside), wrap him in a Thunder Shirt, draw the blinds, lower the lights, poor myself a large glass of wine and sit with him in the closet until he falls asleep... and then I sneak off to pour a second glass.
- C.C., OWNER, LEAD TRAINER
MY DOGS have never bothered with storms or noises. In the beginning, we would give yummy treats or a delicious chew when a storm was going on - now they don’t even blink twice. In fact, Alekos asked to go outside when we had those tornado warnings a few weeks ago. My parent's dog did have severe anxiety with storms - the only thing we were able to do that worked to calm him was make sure he had a safe space to go. We trained him to go into the basement closet during storms & it didn’t take long till he did it on his own. As for fireworks…I typically stay home on the 4th or NYE when I know they will go off just to monitor their behavior & always have lots of yummy treats or chews. If we have to go out during those times, we usually turn up the music we always play for them to help drown out the neighbors setting off fireworks.
- JESSICA, TRAINING ASSISTANT
MY GREAT DANE goes running scared from the sound of his own bodily functions so you can imagine how fun firework-holidays are for us. Thundershirts, CBD, oral gels - anything the vet recommended, we tried & it failed - aside from an entire Xanax bar (which lasted way longer than necessary so that option was out.) After trying literally e.v.e.r.y.thing, our miracle cure ended up being a simple Spotify playlist called “Jazz for Sleep” and a small, dark enclosed space with no windows, like a closet or bathroom. Sometimes we’d have to sit in there with him for a bit until he calmed down, but hey, that beats the hell out of overmedicating my guy.
