According to Hindu mythology, in the ancient Sanskrit Mahabharata, there are five brothers who make a pilgrimage to the Himalayas accompanied by a dog. One by one the brothers die on the way up, until finally, Yudhishthira, the eldest brother and the only one left, reaches the top with the dog by his side.
At the top, Indra, the King of Heaven, welcomes him but asks him to leave the dog behind. Yudhishthira refuses to enter heaven without his dog, citing the dog's unflinching loyalty, and says he’ll go back to earth. Suddenly the dog disappears and is replaced by Yama, the God of death. Indra, impressed, opens the gates of Heaven for Yudhishthira.
By worshipping the animals and ensuring their happiness, Yama can be appeased and death is no longer feared.
