House rules for holiday hooligans
Let’s be honest - the house really belongs to the dog. They just let us live in it. QUICK TIPS
So you want to be a puppy parent
Believe it or not, the early weeks with a new puppy require a little more than just cuddles and playtime. In fact, these weeks are crucial for your pup's well-being and while advice may pour in from all directions, here are few things NOT to do.
DON'T SKIMP ON THE SOCIALS We're not referring to the social networks (there's really no such thing as too many puppy pics) but the same applies to in person socialization and not just your own social calendar of events to show off your new cuddle puddle, it also applies to your puppy's socialization. The first three months shape your puppy's future. Socialize them positively with various experiences, from meeting new people and dogs to encountering different sounds and surfaces. Move at their pace, and associate each new encounter with praise or treats.
DON'T BE THAT PUPPY PARENT We all know those "the cool parents" — the ones that allow their kids to do whatever they want "as long it's under their roof." Well, we've got news for new puppy-parents: being cool isn't worth it. Unsupervised freedom can lead to bathroom accidents and destructive behavior. Puppy-proof your space, and always supervise. Use crate training or baby gates to create a safe area. Only grant unsupervised freedom when potty behavior is controlled and chewing habits are appropriate.
DON'T BE INCONSISTENT Dogs thrive on routine. Establish a schedule for meals, walks and playtime to minimize confusion and stress. It's also essential that the humans in the house are consistent with ground rules and manners. Ensure everyone in the household follows the same set of rules to avoid conflicting expectations.
Remember, it's never too early to reward for desired behaviors. Start teaching basic manners and skills from day one. Embrace positive training methods to build a strong bond and prevent unwanted behaviors. Harsh methods can erode your bond—focus on rewarding positive behaviors and providing alternatives. |
