QUICK TIPS
Too hot for a trot
We recently found out that when's it's 80º outside, the pavement can reach a scalding 143º! And that's not even factoring in heat index and humidity. So when exactly is it too hot to trot with Spot?
☀️NOT ALL BREEDS ARE CREATED EQUAL: Not all breeds can regulate their body temperatures equally. Pugs, Boston Terriers, and French Bulldogs, are more prone to heatstroke than other breeds because of their breathing issues. Breeds with thick fur coats, such as Huskies or Malamutes, don't fair as well in warmer climates, while short-haired breeds like Greyhounds or Pit Bulls are better suited for warmer weather.
☀️THE FIVE-SECOND RULE: Walking dogs in high temperatures can lead to paw pad burns. To test whether or not the pavement is too hot place the back of your hand on the sidewalk. If it's too hot for you - it's too hot for them! The same thing applies for all you beach-goers.
☀️FOLLOW THE SIGNS: Keep a close eye on your dog when out in the heat and pay attention to the signs of overheating:
- Excessive panting - It's normal for a dog to pant when he is warm. A dog who pants while hanging his head low, excessively drooling, walking slowly, and using his abdominal muscles to breathe is excessively panting.
- Red, blue, purple, or gray gums - Dogs experiencing heat stroke will initially have bright red gums, but their gums will begin to change color as the heat stroke worsens.
- Lethargy, disorientation, and uncoordinated walking are signs the dog may be experiencing the advanced stages of heat stroke. Collapsing, vomiting, or seizures are also signs of end-stage heat stroke.
☀️TAKE ACTION: Quick intervention is the key to helping a dog that is experiencing heat stroke:
- Move the dog to a shady location that is well-ventilated.
- Pour cool water over the dog, making sure to avoid the face.
- Do not use cold water or ice water; this will cool a dog down too quickly and send him into shock.
- Do not apply cool or wet towels to the dog. Towels trap heat against the dog’s body, worsening the heat stroke condition.
- If available, place a fan near the dog so that air can move over his body. This will help the water on his body evaporate (which causes a reduction in the air temperature immediately next to the dog) and carry away excess heat.
☀️WHEN IN DOUBT CHART IT OUT: Use this handy chart below to help determine if it's too hot to take your dog for a walk.
