MYTH BUSTING
THE MYTH: Puppies should not go to puppy classes, public places, friends’ houses, etc. until they have had their 6-months vaccinations.
âBUSTED: Excuse us while we bump this common misconception right up to the tippy top into the "danger zone" of dog training myths. What makes this one such a dubious character? Well, for new puppy owners the people "prescribing" this myth are their vets, fosters or rescues - experts. And technically, they're not wrong: a puppy can't get exposed to dog germs if they're not exposed to other dogs. At first puppy-eyed glance it sounds logical enough: an unvaccinated puppy = higher risk for contracting deadly diseases, but take into consideration the dangers of not socializing your puppy. For instance, puppies who aren’t properly socialized are at a much greater risk for developing behavior problems, that are likely to shorten their lives.
Behaviorists will tell you it is most critical to socialize your puppy within the first 3-4 months. Here's the good news: puppies still have their mother's immunities to protect them at this point, plus they're receiving puppy shots to supplement should mama's protection begin to decrease.
âĄïļ REAL TALK: Just because your puppy is protected, doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful. You should still exercise reasonable caution when it comes to the places you are taking Astro & what you're exposing him to in those first months. It goes without saying: avoid unhealthy dogs (& their waste) & uncontrolled environments, like dog parks.
Don't take our word for it. Read the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's (AVSAB) Position Statement on Puppy Socialization. |

FAST FACTS
Freezing your paws off
Baby, it's cold outside & while you're freezing your â―ïļðŠĐðąððŪðūs off to get rambunctious Rambo his exercise, pay close attention to whether or not he actually wants to be out there. Just because he's sporting a fur coat doesn't mean it's actually pleasant for him. So, how cold is too cold? Because this answer actually depends on a number of different factors (breed, size, age, location, etc.) your best bet is to rely on Rambo to tell you. Watch for shaking or shivering, look for his tail between his legs, lifting up his paws or licking them, whining or barking, pulling towards the door or pawing at it. |
