Canine costume considerations
What's better than a labrador dressed as a taco? Well, nothing...except maybe a pug dressed as Slimer from the Ghost Busters. Basically, there are very few things in life that are better than a dog in a costume. Makes sense then that humans spend roughly a billion dollars each year on Halloween costumes for their pets. But it's not a free-for-all and not all costumes are created equal. Sure, dressing up your pup for the 'Gram is all fun and Likes, but let's not forget that is all secondary to how Fido feels. Some dogs just aren't into Halloween, and forcing your floof could be more harmful than fun for the animal. Lucky for you, we're here to help you put the Happy back in Happy Halloween.
Pay attention to your dog's body language and follow these tips for not traumatizing your pup this Halloween.
AVOID THE HEAD If your dog is shying away from the costume you've had picked out for months, it may simply because he doesn't want his ears covered up. Try finding costumes that don't engulf their entire head as they can be anxiety inducing.
DRESS UP THE WALL INSTEAD Here's a novel idea: if your dog doesn't like to be dressed up: don't dress them up. Pin angel wings to the wall and have them sit in front of them. Use props to get cute photos instead. People will be amazed at your creativity and most importantly your pup will appreciate that you took her feelings into consideration.
REMEMBER: DOGS DON'T RECOGNIZE COSTUMES While it may smell like you under that bedazzled pleather Elvis number you're sporting this fright night, your hounddog may not recognize you. So don't get upset with them when they got you singin' the blues.
Outfitting your dog for halloween shouldn't be painful for Fido. C.C. give more pointers on how to get Fido comfortable with his new duds below.

QUICK TIPS
So your pet dog ate your pot
I think we can all agree that furbabies sometimes act more like fur-teens. So when they come in the room high off their hind legs from your medical marijuana, don't freak out and yell at them, but more importantly, don't panic. We'll tell you exactly what to do:
🔎 Gather as much information as possible. - How much weed was ingested - What type it was (i.e. buds vs. leaves) - Any other toxic ingredients involved. Fido ate your weed brownies? Make sure you mention that to your vet.
☠️ Look for any signs of weed poisoning. Some of the symptoms include: - Loss of coordination - Swaying - Inability to control urine - Vomiting - Dilated pupils - Low or high body temperature - Irregular heart rate - Depression or hyperesthesia - In severe cases seizures
🏃Get Toto to the vet. Expect an overnight stay if your dog consumed a high amount.
The most important thing to remember is to stay calm and don't get upset with your dog. Afterall, he didn't leave the weed out - you did champ. |

MYTH BUSTERS
Doggone PSYCHO🔪😱🚿 -logy Myths
Let's face it: there's an encyclopedia of information out there that is just plain wrong. People are tired of Taylor Swift. ❌ WRONG Rat tails & thin eyebrows are making a comeback. ❌ WRONG XXX NEED ONE MORE PIECE OF WRONG INFO XXX ❌ JUST PLAIN WRONG
Unfortunately, our pet dogs are not immune to false info. There's no shortage of false info floating around when it comes to dogs and psychology. So let's bust some dog psychology myths, shall we?
Dogs eat grass when their stomachs hurt. ❌ WRONG TRUTH: Pet dogs eat grass for a variety of reasons and vets don’t actually understand why and studies actually show that they're not eating grass because they're sick. Studies suggest that some dogs eat grass simply because they're bored while others ingest it to help with digestion (grass = fiber). This does not mean it's ok that your dog become a land cow as too much grass can cause blockages.
Flea & tick medication and heartworm prevention is not necessary during the winter or if you live in cold climates. ❌ WRONG TRUTH: Your pets should be on pest and parasite preventatives all year round - even if they're inside at all times. Fleas and other parasitic insects can get inside on our shoes and clothing. Flea eggs can last for years before they hatch. (Ew.) Additionally, heartworm prevention should not be skipped in any season as the warmer temperatures lead to shorter seasons.
A dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's. ❌ JUST PLAIN WRONG TRUTH: Dog-mouth kissers beware! Dog mouths and human mouths are both gathering places for bacteria that likes to party in big groups, like in the billions and dogs have just as much bacteria as humans. This is why it's important to not let your dog lick his/her wounds or surgical incisions as it could result in serious infection or dehiscence (opening) of the wound. |
